Thankfully, illnesses like heart disease are treated much differently now.
Today we have a relatively new cardiac breakthrough called Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). Traditional aortic valve replacement requires opening the chest cavity. But with TAVR, a valve can be threaded up through an artery in the leg. When opened, the new valve pushes the old valve out of the way and takes over the job of regulating blood flow.
This minimally invasive procedure can be performed without general anesthesia.
