We are the iGEM team, representing Hopkins in a synthetic biology competition (International Genetically Engineered Machine) that hosts hundreds of universities and engages students, academics, policy makers, investors, industry representatives, journalists, and a public audience from across the world. Last year (with COVID restrictions on lab space and experimentation), we competed in the virtual event and finished with a bronze medal award. This year, our team of 15 WSE and KSAS undergraduates, supported by graduate and faculty mentors, is engineering plant roots that can be directed by a gradient magnetic field—toward viable space cultivation.
